DUANE'S  WORLD  OF  ADVENTURE

Lighthouses represent a variety of moods ranging from peace and beauty to rage and loneliness.  Although the technical functions of a lighthouse are no longer needed, its attraction is becoming more and more prevalent.  Global Positioning Systems (GPSs) are replacing these sentinels of the past, but they still show us the value that they once had.

Lighthouses were built primarily for communities to attract more commerce their way and to grow.  Only secondarily were they built to warn and protect seafarers.  Today, the goals are still the same, but with the advances in technology these towers are being used as aids to navigation rather than as lighthouses.

There were more than 50,000 lighthouses in the world in the past.  Approximately 800 of those still exist in the United States, with 68 in Maine.
